Dill Hill Park

On September 5, 1910, former President Theodore Roosevelt returned to North Dakota to dedicate the cornerstone of the Carnegie Library at Fargo College, located in what is now known as Dill Hill Park. Having recently completed two terms as the nation’s 26th president, Roosevelt was welcomed by immense public excitement as more than 10,000 people gathered in the rain for the Labor Day celebration.

The event featured a downtown parade that included a historic stagecoach, and a time capsule was sealed within the library’s cornerstone, which was later preserved after Fargo College closed. During the ceremony, Roosevelt delivered a major speech on labor, education, and civic duty, while reflecting warmly on the years he spent ranching in North Dakota’s Badlands, which he described as his “post-graduate course.” He spoke with deep affection for the state, saying it was difficult to express how much he owed North Dakota for shaping his character and life.

Roosevelt’s most famous remark from the visit underscored the profound impact the state had on his future: “If it had not been for what I learned during those years that I spent here in North Dakota, I never in the world would have been president of the United States.” He told the crowd that North Dakotans were “peculiarly responsible” for him and added that it was especially meaningful to feel that he was “back home again.

A bronze equestrian statue of Theodore Roosevelt, sculpted by Gustav Vigeland (a Norwegian artist who also designed the Nobel Peace Prize Medal), was dedicated in 1972 and is located inside the south entry of Old Main on the NDSU campus in Fargo.
